Development Plan 2008/2009

We need to prepare a Development Plan for the Cricket Section for the period 1st Sept 2008 - 31 Aug 2009.

Would you please let us have any items (ie areas for improvement)  you feel should be in it . In each case what the item is  and what action you feel is necessary to over come the problem.

Comments are invited on every aspect of the Section inc matches, junior coaching, facilities and equipment ,  communications with players and supporters and general organisation.

Two items are already identified as possibles:

    a) Dig up Square ( dependant on us becoming a Focus Club to allow us to access potential grant from ECB)

    b)  Lay on  mains power to score box

We would also appreciate any thoughts you may have on longer term development which may only be achievable over say 5 - 10 years. For example,  an indoor cricket building behind the score box has been proposed in the past.

Please send your suggestions (no later than the end of July ) to John Moore either by replying to this  e-mail at john@moorej.freeserve.co.uk ,  writing them down and leaving behind the bar or by ringing me on 636715.

Many thanks, John

2008 Captains Update & key events

Another season is almost upon us and so I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on news from the cricket section.

It’s fair to say we look back on last season with great disappointment. Although the first team retained the 15/15 trophy, poor league form and dreadful weather dominated the season. As we prepare for this year everyone at the club is determined to ensure that 2007 was a blip and this summer we will once again be successful.

We are delighted to have secured the services of New Zealand first class player, Greg Todd as our overseas professional. Greg is a 25 year old left handed batting all-rounder and comes highly recommended. We are confident that Greg, along with English Pro Neil Russell, will be the catalyst for success in 2008.

In a bid to welcome Greg to the club and to give everyone the opportunity to meet him we are planning a ‘meet the pro night’ on Thursday 17th April.

Continuing in this vein we have planned a number of social events to kick start the season. The attached list of key dates gives all the details to pencil in to your diary! For further information and tickets please contact me or ask in the club bar. You can still get a ticket for the Annual Presentation Dinner which will be held in the club on Friday 4th April
In addition to the fundraising events we are also seeking match ball sponsors to help cover the increasing costs of new cricket balls. If you can help, please contact myself or Steve Donlan.

The club has always been blessed with fantastic support and we hope this will continue this summer. I very much look forward to seeing you at one of the club events and during what, I hope, is a successful season.

Best wishes,
Richard Dunn
Club Captain

Gary calls it a day!

After 25 seasons playing cricket for Guisborough Cricket Club, Gary Bolton has finally decided to call it a day. On behalf of everyone connected with the club we thank Gary for giving us a great deal of enjoyment and for his devoted service over the years. We asked Gary to pen a few words and these are given below.

THANK YOU
As most of you will be aware I recently decided to end my playing career with Guisborough Cricket Club. I have had an incredible 25 seasons playing for Guisborough and consider myself very fortunate to have played 920 1st XI games for such a great club during what has been the most progressive and successful period in its history. I have countless long-lasting memories as a “Prioryman”. Just a few that spring to mind are opening the batting with quality test players like Desmond Haynes, Phil Simmons and Murray Goodwin which is a dream come true for any club cricketer. Playing at such an idyllic setting as Fountains Garth with outstanding facilities. The success we have experienced as a club over the years both within the N.Y.S.D. League/Cups and through our exploits in North East and National competitions. The abilities, loyalty and spirit amongst fellow players. Long-term close friendships with many current and former players, supporters and club members. It is impossible for me to mention everyone individually who has meant so much to me over the years in this article but in summary I would like to say thanks to:

The players (past and present) - The level of friendship, camaraderie and spirit of the Guisborough players over the years is extremely rare in any sport but has undoubtedly been an intrinsic and vital ingredient of the club psyche and its success. The supporters - One of the reasons I joined Guisborough back in 1983. Often large in number, loyal, usually vociferous and never short to offer “constructive advice” to visiting players (and sometimes even Guisborough players). I have always been made welcome and the continuing support and encouragement since then is something that I will never forget. My family - Diane, James, Mum and Dad for their continued support, patience, help, encouragement and many sacrifices that have helped me over the years.

Looking back I would like to think that I have always given my best and hopefully everyone has enjoyed sharing the many good times with me. Guisborough Cricket Club has been an important part of my life since 1983 and although my playing career at the club is now at an end, I still have every intention of continuing my involvement with the club in various ways. Furthermore, through my son James, I am also hoping the Bolton family link with the club will continue on the field for the next generation. All that remains is for me to offer everyone associated with at the club my best wishes for the future.

Gary Bolton
