Under 15 Match reports

GUISBOROUGH U-15 V STOKESLEY U-15,    LEAGUE

SUNDAY 23RD MAY 2010

Guisborough hosted Stokesley at Fountains Garth on a glorious sunny morning.Guisborough batted first and put in their best batting performance of the season to date. The openers put on 40 runs before James Bolton was run out for 28 with partner Jack Levitt going on to score a useful 18. Brad Passmore hit an impressive unbeaten 43 (7 x 4’s) and along with John Hewson (16 not out) and 30 extras the Priorymen finished on 135-2 in their 20 overs. B. Craggs 0-13 in 4 overs and S. Wilson 1-17 in 4 overs were the best of the Stokesley bowlers.

In reply the young Stokesley side put up a commendable effort without ever threatening the Guisborough total, finishing on 100 for 3. Ed Borwell (26 not out) and A Rowling (39 not out) putting together a very useful unbroken fourth wicket partnership. The innings gave a number of Guisborough players the chance to have a bowl with Andrew Watson 2-9  and Chris Matthews 0-6 – both off 4 overs – being the pick.

A confidence boosting first win of the season for Guisborough ahead of some tougher looking fixtures over the coming weeks.

NORMANBY HALL U-15 V GUISBOROUGH U-15,  LEAGUE

SUNDAY 30TH MAY 2010

Guisborough went into the match without four regulars who were on a rugby tour to South Africa. With an under-15 squad of only 12 players and the Under-13 team already having a fixture the same morning, Guisborough could field 8 players for the match. However, the postponement of the under-13 match at Guisborough due to rain meant that 3 under-13 players were able to make the dash to Cricket Lane and the cavalry arrived  just in time for the start of the game.

James Bolton top scored for the Priorymen with 20 and good support came from Brad Passmore who scored 16 before being unluckily run out and Kieran Weyer who scored a patient and well constructed 18 not out to hold the teams innings together.

In reply J. McCullock (28) and M. Rose (26) batted well for the hosts. Chris Matthews 2-13 in 4 overs and Kieran Weyer an exceptional 3-6 in 2.3 overs ensured that Normanby were made to fight all the way. In a tense finish Normanaby edged home by  4 wickets with only 3 balls to spare.

The under strength Guisborough team had put in an excellent performance and deserved something out of the game. Special thanks must go to the under-13’s who helped out at short notice and all fielded well – Matthew Donlan, Kieran Lear and Ross Sadler.

GUISBOROUGH U-15 V REDCAR U-15 GREAVES CUP (GROUP MATCH)

THURSDAY 17TH JUNE 2010

Guisborough took on Redcar in this twice postponed Greaves Cup Group A tie. A good crowd turned up on one of the warmest nights of the season.

Batting first the seasiders were indebted to B. Halliday (26) and J. Cooper (37) as well as 26 extras for their final 20 over score of 113–4. Pick of the Guisborough bowlers was years old Andrew Watson 3-17 in 4 overs – just reward for his efforts.

In reply to the challenging total James Bolton produced an outstanding knock of 47 (8 x 4’s and 1 x 6) before being caught on the boundary 3 runs short of the 50 run retirement score. Guisborough were placed needing 60 off 10 overs but with no one able to reach double figures in the late run chase the innings finished on 80-9 after 20 overs. For the visitors M. Atkinson 2-8 in 3 overs and A. Pearson 3-9 in 3 overs impressed the most.

Defeat but nevertheless an encouraging performance especially in the field against a Redcar team likely to be amongst the honours this season.

GUISBOROUGH U-15 V WHITBY U-15

GREAVES CUP (GROUP MATCH)  SUNDAY 20TH JUNE 2010

Visitors Whitby arrived at Fountains Garth with a 100% record for the season having won all six previous matches. Guisborough batted first and Captain James Bolton again led from the front and continued his good form scoring a classy 50 not out (8 x 4’s) before having to retire under the competition rules. John Hewson chipped in with a useful 12 not out and with 17 extras Guisborough ended on a respectable 94-2 against a very competent Whitby bowling attack.

The Priorymen performed reasonably well in the field with an outstanding catch from Kieran Weyer being the highlight. Their cause was not helped however when having already starting with only 10 men they lost Brad Passmore to a knee injury and he had to be carried from the field – everyone wishes him a speedy recovery. Whitby kindly offered a sub fielder to cover.

Whitby’s powerful batting line-up went on to prove to be too strong and they won comfortably scoring the required 95 runs for only 1 wicket in the 17th over.  Matty Towey 40 and Luke Harrison 24 both remaining unbeaten with some good batting and running between the wickets.

Whitby were worthy winners and will take some beating this season based on their impressive start to the season and this win. The Guisborough lads did their best and although the batting was sound they saw at first hand what is required to be successful at this level and hopefully will have learnt from their experience in the field.

U-15 match reports 9/16th May

GUISBOROUGH U-15 V MARSKE U-15 SUNDAY 9TH MAY 2010

Guisborough opened their League campaign at home to local rivals Marske. The Fountains Garth ground was in superb condition thanks mainly to the efforts of John and Pat Dunn who as usual were working at the ground very early in the day !
Guisborough won the toss and put the visitors into bat. The Marske innings was held together by opener Alex Puckrin who accelerated his innings to perfection scoring 48 before retiring hurt in the penultimate over. With the next highest scorer being 8 extras Marske mustered 82 for 5 in their 20 overs. Pick of the Guisborough bowlers in their four over apiece were James Fitzgibbon (1-8), James Bolton (1-12) and Jack Levitt (1-5).
In reply Guisborough opener James Bolton top scored with 31 with good support from James Fitzgibbon (18). However, the re-introduction of County bowler Joe Easton proved crucial as Guisborough finished on 77 for 4 in their 20 overs thereby losing by 5 runs.
A disappointing result for Guisborough but a generally good performance overall. The game was played in the right spirit between two evenly matched teams and with some quality cricket played at times.

REDCAR U-15 V GUISBOROUGH U-15 SUNDAY 16TH MAY 2010

Guisborough faced tough opposition in the form of reigning Champions Redcar at Coatham Road.
Redcar batted first having lost the toss. Opening bats and County players Tiler Easton (51 not out) and Sam Berry (35) put them well in control of the game by the mid-point of the innings.
However, the Guisborough lads showed spirit in fighting back well with Brad Passmore taking 4-15 and John Hewson 3-28 in their allotted 4 overs each. Hewson also took a memorable diving catch late in the innings. Redcar ended on a formidable total of 140-9 off their 20 overs.
Against an impressive Redcar bowling attack Guisborough finished on 64-4 in their 20 overs. Main contributions were made by Jack Levitt (13), Dave Wardell (11 not out) and Brad Passmore (22 not out) – the latter completing an excellent debut.
A 72 runs defeat at the hands of one of the worthy title favourites but still some positives to take from the game.
Next match is at home to Stokesley on Sunday 23rd May (9.30 am start).

Guisborough CC Awarded Focus Club status

Guisborough Cricket Club is delighted to have been awarded Focus Club status by the Yorkshire Cricket Board. This reflects the great deal of hard work done over recent years to gain Clubmark status and, more recently, our progress in further developing cricket both within Guisborough Cricket Club and the surrounding area.

Being a Focus Club means we will be in a better position to seek to obtain grants both from the ECB and other funding bodies and will be first in line to receive support from the YCB.

However, it does bring responsibilities too, the main one being to work with schools in our area each year to introduce pupils to cricket as part of their curriculum and also to introduce them to Guisborough Cricket Club Junior Section. We will also be expected to help other local clubs to develop.

Our performance against targets set in our Development Plan will also be carefully monitored to ensure we are achieving what we set out to do.
Our thanks go to everyone involved in helping us gain this award.
